Teaching styles vary from school to school and teacher to
teacher. There are a lot of available resources to teachers trying to find
their way. All I can do is share and hopefully help someone out with what I’ve
learned in the past.
Now, I’ve taught 6th grade ELA for the past two
years and I quickly learned that they must stay engaged if you want them to pay
attention. I stumbled across Whole Brain Teaching during my late night searches
for help in the classroom. It absolutely helps to keep them engaged because they
remain involved with every aspect of learning.
Here is a sample of a sixth grade classroom using whole
brain teaching.
Now, I took it a step further because I had 6 classes I had
to find a way to keep them motivated. I had a jar for each class and every time
they did WBT correctly they got a stone in their jar, the class with the most
stones at the end of the six weeks earned themselves an ice cream party in
class. It really helped them to get motivated to do the right thing. There are
many different variations of this powerful teaching tool but I believe that
truly engages the kids, and as a user of this technique myself I can fully
stand by it. It’s fun, engaging, and easy for the kids to learn and do.
Here is also a book about the technique available through
amazon.com. Good luck and please share your experiences with whole brain
teaching here.
