Welcome to my blog! I am a 2nd year teacher and I
am still very much finding my way. I realized after the very first week of
teaching that it was not at all what I pictured. I was like everyone else in
the world who doesn’t teach, thinking that you go and you get to play and have
fun with the kids, sing a few songs, grade a couple of papers and go home when
the kids do. I quickly realized that this fake-ality could not be further from
the truth. I arrived at least an hour before the kids did and stayed an hour
after and still managed to have to take work home. I planned rigorous and
engaging lessons but did not realize that I also needed to plan behavior
lessons. I learned how to eat in five minutes or less while simultaneously
making copies and grading papers with one hand and with other I was making
phone calls to parents about behavior or worse scores!
I said all this to say that if you make it through the first
two years, it does get better. You build relationships with co-workers that go
beyond the speaking type. I mean they go deep, all I have to do is give a look
during passing periods, they give a look back and just like that we have
carried on a full on conversation all without saying a word or leaving our
post. You become a mother, therapist, nurse, father, sister, brother; engineer
and magician all in the day, who knew that the word teacher had so many
synonyms. But, the best part of teaching (shhh…come in close this is a secret)
is without a doubt the kids, to know that you are making difference in a child’s
life while teaching them how to make inferences within the text is truly
amazing. I can’t tell you how it feels to know that, your kids are going to go
off and become someone successful because you helped them.
So, let’s share ideas and thoughts to make this oh so simple
(wink, wink) job just a little easier for those of us that know better.
